18 April 2013 - THE GATLING BOY - Newmarket, Unplaced. £200,000 Tattersalls Millions 3-Y-O Trophy over 1 mile 2 furlongs, ridden by Richard Hughes.
He was very much on his toes in the pre-parade ring at Newmarket yesterday on a really horrible day with a strong wind and squally rain. When Richard Hughes joined us, he said he was very concerned about the last two furlongs going down into the dip. The Gatling Boy, who looked well, broke smartly and was in the first three at the mile marker. Hughes kept a steady hold on him, but as they went down into the dip he quickly lost his place. However he picked up well in the last furlong, passing several horses to grab 9th place on the line and a small consolation prize of £2,000!
When he got off the horse, Hughes, who always says it as it is, told me had been delighted with the horse, had been impressed with how well he had stayed and might get even further.
30 March 2013 - REDACT - Kempton Park, Unplaced. 4.05pm 6 Places at Aintree with Betvictor Conditions Stakes for four-year-olds and upwards over 7 furlongs, ridden by Sean Levey.
He looked well at Kempton, despite still having a wooly coat. Drawn on the outside, Richard thought we should tuck in on the rails and come late. However the plan didn't work! The ultimate winner, Bronze Prince came across Redact as the stalls opened and not content with that crossed him again as he went to the front setting a crawl of a pace. Sean Levey did as he was told and tucked in last on the rails. Bronze Prince quickened up over 2 furlongs out and left the whole field for dead. Redact was still in rear with the second favourite and neither of them got into the race.
Whilst he is sure to improve on that next time, we will keep Redact on the turf and at a minimum of a mile. We might be tempted to go a bit further with him too.
